Introducing: The 1975

Who remembers the Manchester band B I G S L E E P who had two massive tunes on YouTube about a year ago? One was titled ‘Sex’ and the other I can’t remember because they disappeared offline somewhere and couldn’t be found online anywhere. Well they reappeared as ‘The Slowdown’, disappeared again and now they’re back with a vengeance as The 1975… Remarkably these guys are also from Manchester, the lead singer has a slightly crazier haircut this time around, I’m pretty sure they’ve lost a member, they’re a little more electronic and a little less Kings of Leon sounding now… But then things change, nothing lasts forever and who knows maybe they’ll bring back the two ‘massive tunes’ I was chatting about it and play them as The 1975?! That would be controversial, especially with a new haircut like that…

Anyway THIS is a great song; catchy, powerful drums, pretty epic sounding, good hooks but I’m just left wondering one thing… Why is the guy with the haircut holding a guitar in the video? – Is he trying out the Bono (‘With Or Without You’), in thinking that it’s cool to hold a guitar and never play it AT ALL? Some things we’ll just never understand; like why Emile Sande was featured so heavily in the Olympics Closing Ceremony, and how Cliff Richard has got away with it for all these years?… I guess it’s just a relief that this song isn’t an Ed Sheeran cover, as it’s title ‘The City’ suggests it may have been…

And now for something completely different… The title track to their EP ‘Facedown’ sounds like Imogen Heap, Brian Eno and Jon Hopkins and displays a softer and more powerful side to the band. It certainly packs a punch and makes them a whole lot more interesting. We’re all keen to hear more…
