6th September – Mi7 Records & Akira @ Proud Camden

Hey friends!

As it’s September (can you adam ‘n’ eve it??) we thought it’d only be right and proper to embark on the ultimate quest for the perfect lineup. And we think, we THINK, we may have succeeded. It’s just not going to give you the time to stop moving or breathe or even contemplate the impending wintry gloom, that’s a promise.

Without further a do, we’ve arranged for your pleasure……

///SOCCER 96///

We write on the brink of hyperventilating, since this month’s headliner has been described as “the musical love child of Flying Lotus and DJ Shadow”. Like a beatnik lightning bolt they are set to light up Proud with their fresh brand of electro that balances creative drums and analogue synth sounds. Championed by the likes of Tom Robinson and Brighton’s XYZ Magazine, we can’t wait to present them to you.

We’re really into Kites. With catchy but thoughtfully constructed songs, they’ve been attracting considerable attention from all quarters recently. Their reputation for a particularly energetic live show precedes them and having been described as ‘the hottest unsigned band in the UK’ by Musicweek no less, you’d be mad to miss out. Sounding like Patrick Wolf-esque vocals moving over Depeche Mode’s chords, this band is going to be your worst-kept music secret after this.

Years & Years have fast become personal favourites of ours on the capital’s circuit. Ever since they played at an Akira show back in the dark days of pre-summer, their sweet but soulful vocals over pumping yet warm bass lines and beautifully twisting guitars have resonated on, setting the unsigned bar unusually high. Adding pedals, loopers, ebow and wait for it, uke, over the usual array of laptops, guitars and drums, makes them not only a visual delight but aurally, awfully satisfying.

First on the bill this month is London-based Younghearts. The four-piece need little introduction on the gig scene; they’ve been bringing their brand of energetic rock to an ever-growing fan base this year which has come to include yours truly. Armed with some new material (exciting), Younghearts seem to be an unstoppable force and we’re very much looking forward to seeing them play again.
