Akira’s Song of the Day: Gabrielle Aplin – The Power of Love

Akira’s Song of the Day is a beautiful rendition of ‘The Power of Love’ by Gabrielle Aplin of Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s classic. This is a stripped back epic cover and this formula just works, a girl with a beautiful voice singing a cover of a classic tune (sang by a male) and completely reinventing it. It’s a smart move by Gabrielle Aplin and her Management/Label as this rendition is now being used as the John Lewis Christmas advert and is undoubtedly going to propel Gabrielle Aplin to stardom and the attention of mainstream audiences, in fact today it charted in the Top 40 in the Official Charts. It’s like with Paloma Faith recently covering INXS ‘Never Tear Us Apart’, and it being used on a John Lewis advert, it’s probably the best thing Paloma Faith has ever done, and so far this is probably the best thing Gabrielle Aplin has ever done. It makes me wonder do they decide to do a cover and then pitch it to John Lewis or Marks & Spencer or another huge brand or is this just set up by some ad agency and is Gabrielle Aplin asked to do this..? I guess I’ll never know unless it happens to me or someone I know. Anyway one thing is for sure, one way to propel yourself from obscurity into the mainstream is to do a cover of a classic song, on a piano, look at Birdy, she was wise enough to do it and she was only 14… Here are some more examples of girls singing classic covers with piano arrangements…

Gabrielle Aplin – The Power of Love

Paloma Faith – Never Tear Us Apart

Sara Lov – There is a Light That Never Goes Out

Charlene Soraia – Wherever You Will Go

Birdy – Skinny Love
