LEITH
BIOGRAPHY
Jessie Leith Munro, known professionally as Leith, is a Toronto-born singer and songwriter whose musical journey has traversed classical training, musical theatre, and contemporary pop. Her evolution as an artist reflects a seamless blend of diverse influences, culminating in a distinctive sound from her tapestry of experience. Leith began her musical education at a young age, starting classical voice lessons at eight. Her early training laid a solid foundation in vocal technique, which she later integrated into her passion for R&B, pop, and rock genres. During her high school years at the Etobicoke School of the Arts, she majored in musical theatre, an experience that ignited her passion for performance. Being drawn to the freedom of finding a voice for different personas and characters. A passion that still shines through in her lyrics, which are rich in storytelling. After high school, Leith attended the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she refined her songwriting skills and deepened her understanding of music production. Leith honed her craft, finding her unique voice by layering the music that inspired her as a child with the contemporary sounds she was discovering as an adult. Her music evolved into a thoughtful, confessional pop style, drawing influences from soul and rock. Leith cites Carole King and Phoebe Bridgers as key inspirations, with both artists’ atmospheric sound and narrative lyricism echoing through her own work. After graduation Leith relocated to Los Angeles, immersing herself in the city's vibrant music scene. Her time in LA was marked by the release of her debut EP, "On My Own," in 2018, a raw, poetic collection that explored the emotional stages of a breakup. The project was created in collaboration with her ex-partner, who co-produced and co-wrote on the EP. Leith explains, “we were the only two people who knew and understood exactly what happened,” reflecting the unflinching authenticity that is a key theme in all of her music. With a few years spent in LA, Leith realised that in order to grow, she wanted to move beyond her comfort zone. With her friends from Berklee all only ten minutes away, she reflected, “When you know people so well from those formative years, it's harder to grow. You can't grow on your own anyway.” So, in 2021, she made the proactive decision to move to London, seeking a fresh environment to kindle her creative progression. In London, she rebranded to the stage name Leith, her middle name, and began crafting a more ambient pop sound. Collaborating with producer Jonah Summerfield and singer-songwriter Dylan Fraser. She released singles like ‘Big Trees’ and ‘Love Vibes,’ garnering acclaim for their innovative melodies and storytelling. Then in 2022, she released her debut album Birthdays In July, which received praise from Clash Music and Atwood Magazine, the latter calling it “a stunningly cinematic and unapologetically raw coming-of-age upheaval dwelling in the deep end.” Leith has since continued to release singles and EPs, including ‘Good Time’, which was played on Radio One’s Future Artists, ‘Bubble Bath’, ‘To Hell with You’, and ‘Running Wild.’ Her music showcases her ability to effortlessly switch between stripped-back acoustic ballads and high-energy pop anthems. She describes her creative process as one that centres on “bringing to life the intention of the lyrics with a melody that evokes that same emotion.” Currently Leith’s momentum shows no signs of slowing down. In 2024, her debut headline show at Camden Assembly sold out, and her upcoming European spring tour in 2025 is already selling out venues. All signalling to an exciting new chapter in her career. Her journey from classical training to contemporary pop artist exemplifies her versatility and dedication to her craft. With each release, Leith continues to captivate audiences with her soulful vocals and compelling narratives, solidifying her place in the modern music landscape.
