As they aptly describe it, their music is for “sensitive hearts that like to dance.” The duo consists of Victor Barroso and Maria Gomez, who met in 2020 while both were studying for their Masters in Music at Tileyard in London. Bonding over their shared roots in Barcelona, their friendship quickly deepened as they discovered their kindred taste in music. When the COVID pandemic struck, both chose to stay in London, where they collaborated daily on various projects. Initially working remotely, they began meeting in the studio as the world slowly returned to normalcy. The creative energy between them was undeniable - so much so that, during solo projects, they realized they missed the synergy they had when working together. They wanted to create a project where both their passions could meld together towards a united vision. This sparked the idea to form an official duo, and thus, yuraa was born. The collaboration between Victor and Maria is truly a partnership, with both contributing to production, melodies, and lyrics. Their creative chemistry is rooted in their deep friendship, with Victor’s focus leaning towards the production details and Maria focusing on songwriting elements as her powerful solo vocals soar over their tracks. Their sound blends electronic sub-genres, drawing on influences from house, breakbeat, and dream pop, while artists like Caribou, Jamie XX, Tourist, and Kllo serve as key inspirations. Maria’s vocals, with their soulful intensity, evoke the styles of artists like Yebba and Snoh Alegra, adding a layer of evocative depth to yuraa’s music. Their debut single ‘Give Into Me’ (2023), immediately set the tone for their musical journey. The track explores themes of love, friendship, heartbreak, and hope. They described the track as capturing “the moment when you finally allow yourself to fall for someone. It's about the joy and tenderness of the early stages of love, and letting go of the fears that make you hesitant.” While their first single of 2024, ‘Run Together’ was written as “a celebration of true and meaningful friendships.” These heartfelt themes make yuraa’s music universally accessible, and their growing fanbase reflects their ability to connect on an emotional level. Their first debut headline show at Camden Assembly has sold out, with their live shows having garnered attention for their engaging performances.
